Movies-some must sees !

April 27, 2011

Recently I saw several movies.  Each in it’s own right was extremely disturbing. The first was For Colored Girls, a Tyler Perry movie which has an amazing cast and phenomenal acting. It is for all girls, in fact, for all people. The subject -the human condition and difficult circumstances that can force one to alter the direction of one’s life. The depth of tragedy and the poetry, the extreme situations…all were so excruciatingly expressed..  I was surprised that this film was not in the theaters long; it’s quality and depth warrant wide distribution.

The next movie was Waiting For Superman…a documentary about the causes of our failing educational system.  The film shows why so many of our children do not have a chance to succeed…..go to this link to read some reviews and opinions:  The viewer will see what it is like for homeless families living in motels.  When they get behind in their rent, they must leave and their children must attend yet another new school. If you care about children, this country and education, you will find time to view this gripping movie.

Another movie I saw at the theater was The Fighter, good for anyone who does not understand addiction.  It is the true  story of a hard-core dysfunctional family and their quest to have a champion pro fighter in their family.  No cost was too high.

The last movie I’d like to recommend is Fathead, an expose of our government, medical researchers, pharmaceutical companies. It tells us how we have been duped for decades about the real results of research.  It even shows the discrepancies in Morgan Spurlock’s research for his movie Super Size Me.  The truth is that when I saw Super Size Me when it first came out, I was very impressed.  Apparently the stats simply don’t hold up when scrutinized.

It’s all been enlightening. I find all of the untruths disheartening…are we all just a bunch of naive ninnies?  I’d love to hear your comments.

This is MeddlingMom…enjoy the movies!

William and Catherine- Much Ado About Something!

April 26, 2011

Wow! the big day will be here Friday, William and Kate will tie the knot at the end of this week.  I am personally not all that interested in all of the hoopla…but as I see so much info on almost every single TV show I watch, it is getting to be a little more interesting to me.  I think it’s  smart that they have been together for a long time…is it 9 years or 10…something like that. That means they probably have had the opportunity to get to know each other well…I hope so.  They seem like a sweet couple, though the truth is…we have very little info about what Kate’s interests are and her personality thus far seems AWOL.  I am pleased to hear that William has been protective of Kate regarding the press…that is very different from the way his father, Prince Charles, treated his mother, Princess Diana (who was barely beyond puberty and certainly needed that protection).

I find it rather odd that so many Americans are so very interested in every detail of the goings-on. I have found that many of the interviews with citizens from Great Britain about the couple have revealed precious little new or exciting findings.  That’s what I find annoying, you are lured into yet another show where you are supposedly going to learn SOMETHING -FINALLY- and there is essentially NOTHING!!! Do you get it? NO THING  of import.

This morning I saw Barbara Walters and Robin Roberts on Good Morning America – live in London – at Buckingham Palace, indoors…so this was to be some big deal thing, right? The truth it was one more disappointment, Barbara and Robin talking to each other, making chit chat while sitting in the palace, Barbara (and I like her) once again talking as she so often does, reminding us that she has been around forever and has interviewed absolutely everyone INCLUDING PRINCESS DIANA – IN THIS VERY PALACE! Then  she tells you that that was the interview where Diana told Barbara how unhappy she was in her marriage.  Apparently when the content of that interview became known, Queen E decided it was time for Charles and Diana to get divorced!

So…during the next few days, I know we will see and hear much about the monarchy, about Kate comparing her to Diana over and over again. I truly hope we all learn some new things after spending so much time and emotional energy on all of this. But I do have a question…why is this of such interest to you?  There must be people in your own life who you might want to know more about…whose history or feelings might impact your life and perception. I suggest you examine if there is someone in your life who might really NEED your time and attention, someone who loves you and knows you exist. Or maybe there is a project you have been wanting to work on or some class you’ve wanted to take….oh, all the fancy clothes (and this IS history) and decor will be fun to see.  Just remember those you love or care about and who give you so much every day…who might really enjoy it if you exhibited an interest in their direction?

Enjoy the wedding and all of the glamour…and also enjoy your family and friends…it’s all good!  So sorry to  sound so cranky, but one more thing….I HATE the accent …it makes my blood run cold!  By the way, I understand economy class airline tickets started at $2700 and other tickets went for as high as $27,000!   As Wendy’s used to say “Where’s the beef?”

This is MeddlingMom…happy wedding!

Americans Are So Fortunate!

April 16, 2011

I am feeling very inspired right now. Yes, I know we have so many problems that aren’t being resolved. but we are still among the most fortunate people in the world in general.  I was at BJ’s yesterday and picked up a magazine I used to read years ago, not one for the high-minded or for someone looking to be lifted up intellectually, but a good chock-full-of-useful-information publication…Woman’s World.  I picked it up because the cover mentioned By next week you can JUICE OFF 9 lbs!  I have a  juicer and have used it several times….apples and carrots are great together!  I do remain intereted in the benefits of fresh juice from fruits and vegetables…so I snapped up the pub and threw it in my cart.   Just a little while ago, I thought I’d take a peek at the article mentioned. On page 18 Kris Carr’s story is told. She has had cancer for a number of years and has managed to make her tumors dormant with the program she created. It is described in the article and also in her book Crazy Sexy Diet. It is a very specific vegan diet plan. The article also reports 6 statistics about how a vegan or plant-based diet allows you to have a significantly healthier and disease-free life.  Not bad!

When I turned the page, there was an article on 7-day miracle energy makeover!  There are actually 7 items listed with detailed information about improving your energy/health.  Here are 2 examples: Read your make-ups ingredients. It talks about parabens and how they disrupt your thyroid function and hormones! and Take a 25 minute bath…there are physical benefits to doing so.

The truth is that we are incredibly fortunate for the variety of information available to us …at our very fingertips (now it would be truly amazing if we felt we actually had the time to read and absorb all of the info).  I am lucky because I have had the luxury of sitting here reading for the better part of 5 hours…learning, enjoying and it is even more delightful because it is a nasty, rainy day outside!

On another note, my daughter ordered a magazine for me last year which she purchased at Whole FoodsWell Being Journal.  It is loaded with mostly non-traditional medical results and everything except mainstream thinking regarding health and well being. It is quite a relief to read it, very refreshing and empowering.  It comes out 6 times/year and costs a mere $25!  A bargain…I just renewed my subscription.  One of the articles in the most recent issues describes cinnamon as important to managing blood glucose levels as vitamin C was and is for scurvy!  Each edition is loaded with possibilities for better health managed by YOU!

I hope this has been interesting and helpful to you. Pass it along to family and friends if you think they’d find value here.

This is MeddlingMom…have a nice weekend.

TV-Secret Millionaire-have you watched this show?

April 12, 2011

Last night I watched a show that started several weeks ago on ABC. It is called Secret Millionaire. The premise is that a millionaire takes a week and goes to an assigned town, seeking out people who are doing something to help in a significant way in their communities.  The person is housed in a not-so-great apartment, usually dirty, and given $15 to $20 a day on which to live.  She/He tell people they are there to volunteer or that they are doing research.  At the end of the week, the millionaire has volunteered at 3 or 4 places and decides how much money to contribute to each group or organization.

This week, the millionaire was Ali Brown, a successful, local entrepreneur from Venice Beach, CA, an affluent community..  She had had a nice life, good  and supportive parents and felt very appreciative about her life.  Her assignment …she was driven only 2 miles from her home…she was still in Venice Beach, but in a neighborhood that she would have never visited before.  When she saw how hard life was for homeless women and their babies (or actually would have been had they not found the housing help they needed), it was hard for her to keep her emotions in check.  She was so moved by what she saw with all of the organizations.  This changed her life forever!  Watching her visits with the organizations and those leaders being informed that they have been working with a millionaire is always fun, interesting and inspiring.  Of course the best part is when the millionaire pulls out a check for $10,000, $20,000 or even $250,000!  Last night’s show was particularly poignant and I found myself crying several times. Last night she gave Harvest Home $50,000 to help with the work they are doing for single women with babies who live at Harvest Home.   She also gave out 3 other checks to other groups with whom she had volunteered.  To see a recap, click on recap.  Other shows in the series were equally as moving; this is a gripping series.

Watching the series, my partner and I have said,”Why don’t they contribute more? These people are multi-millionaires!”  The truth is…you can see this as you watch the appreciation of the millionaires for the groups they are working with that the millionaires will probably be watching these groups and continuing to contribute where appropriate.  Another thought that comes to mind is that the problems are so huge…you feel that you can’t even make a dent and that is the reason why ALL OF US may not be contributing and helping in our communities…but WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  A single donation may feel like it is going into an abyss…for sure…but it isn’t. If you are the individual who gets to be helped because someone made a donation or reached out, you KNOW that that person helped you to survive and possibly to be able to buy your child a much needed article of clothing or a shirt to be in the school play or food.  Your help does make a difference.

So, even though you may not be a millionaire, I encourage you to look around for a local organization that is helping to change lives and either volunteer (I know, that can feel scary or uncomfortable) or make a donation, $25, $50 or more WILL make a difference and it probably means nothing to you to not have that cash available.  Almost every community has a food cupboard, a homeless shelter, an organization that helps those with drug or alcohol addiction or a place for battered women to get help.  You can help.  Put this on your calendar…Make April the month when you start.

When I needed it, some people helped me. It didn’t solve all of my problems or take care of everything, but it made a difference.  I will never forget.
This is MeddlingMom…have a good day! Let me know when you find the right organization for your donation!

Too much to do! and think about! ALWAYS!

April 4, 2011

I was wondering what to write about, what might interest people and I realized that in the course of a day or a week, I am exposed to so much information that I can barely breathe…much less figure out what to write about…..the problem is that I receive way too much e-mail from way too many organizations, individuals, stores and of course, there are those newsletters and blogs.  I am exhausted over the responsibility I feel to learn about everything, to be knowledgeable, to be up-to-date on current events (in this area I am waaaybehind) and to just feel like I have my head on straight!

Does anyone else feel this way or am I simply nuts? It seems daily living has become so complicated…the details of keeping up are mind-boggling.  I’ll give you an example:  I was online the other day looking at my bank accounts.  I saw a $3.00 fee for making too many transfers from one account to another in a month’s time (I made 3).  Let’s get real…these are ELECTRONIC transactions!!! Is there someone who has to do something about the transactions which would justify a fee?  Yes, I realize they have technicians who keep all of their computer systems running smoothly.  While on the phone, I asked one more time about the fee I pay monthly for having a checking account.  I was told if I had a direct deposit automatically into the account, I would have no fee.  Since I am self-employed and have a very small business, there is no check from payroll.  Then I was told if I wanted to have an electronic, paperless acoount, I could have it for free.  That would mean I would have to do all transactions at the ATM machine.  I usually use that for deposits anyway, but…I didn’t think to ask whether that meant I could no longer go to  a teller inside the bank or whether the restriction was only for the teller at the drive-up window…hmmm…..then again, I do stop and think about what a bargain it is to have the use of an account for just a few dollars (not as few as it used to be, I might add). Really, we Americans don’t realize how much we have!  Why should the account be free when the bank is providing a service…they should receive something, right?  I mean they have a  building and employees at the local branch, heat, electric, phones…they do have to pay for all of this…

I digress.  the point is that this is one little minor aspect of my life.  When did everything become so complicated? Was I asleep for 20 years?  Another thing that makes me insane…I purchased a camera recently…and a printer…the only thing that was included as far as instructions was the “Quick Guide”…no REAL information came with either of these items, nothing to tell me how to use the new item and the features  and how they work!  It’s unbelievable…they tell you to go online to their site and that’s where the information is! If you’re lucky, there is an actual manual that you can download…otherwise, there is all kinds of info, so much that it is damn near impossible to decipher which information you need to read to resolve your issue.  Remember, you are only on the site because you have no idea how to use the new item…all you really wanted was a manual in English that is clear and complete.

I can’t believe I am even burdening you with such nonsense, but the truth is…these “things” seem to take up so much time and energy!  Imagine if you were hard-of hearing and couldn’t hear the voice prompts?  Oh, dear, never thought of that before, but those days are probably coming…

I have no solution for this stuff, except to remember how lucky you are to be here and to have LIFE.  The truth is… being flexible and not taking life too  seriously is just about all you have available to deal with these situations. Being flexible in your thinking can help you to survive the crazy, over-stimulating world we live in today!  Just laugh or sing out loud and be sure to appreciate that you are speaking to a human on the phone, someone who is trying to help you…rather than a recording.

On another subject, I have started exercising in the mornings.  Did you know that ON DEMAND has exercise routines for free?  We’re talking … just about any kind you could imagine, yoga, core, dancing, and every aspect of these in as little time as 8 minutes.  They also have meditation in the same area.  This morning I did a Hip Hop session.  It was pretty basic, but it got  funny as one movement that was introduced simply didn’t work for me. It was one of those deals where you use one foot and leg and the reverse arm at the same time…quickly…I didn’t really focus too much on making it happen. I just kept moving (that’s the idea, right?) and I actually found myself laughing out loud at how bad I was with this one particular move!  Silly, but it was fun and I got in some exercise.  The challenge is to do a routine every day and to gradually add more time (and maybe some weights) to it.

It’s true, one of the few things you can count on is… to be flexible in your thinking and to anticipate that adapting will be needed often in your life will make your life much easier…EXPECT to have to be flexible…The tree that bends weathers the storm….

This is MeddlingMom…have a great day!
