Dilemma or Dilemna? Which is it? Do you know?

I wrote a blog the other day and mentioned that I hadn’t known that the word”dilemma” was spelled with two “M’s”. I had always thought it was spelled dilemna.  After I wrote the blog post, my partner read it and said she felt the same way about it…we had both always taken great pride in our seeming natural excellence in the area of spelling (kind of pathetic, don’t you think?).  I decided to do a little research about it. I also asked my sister what she thought and she spelled it with two “Ms”, but sounded hesitant about whether that was correct. I googled “dilemma or dilemna”. Take a look at this link to read some heartfelt reactions to the quandary (maybe we should all just start using that word !):

Then there is also Grammar Girl who says the “mn” ending is simply incorrect and was never ok.  How can that be? http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/is-it-dilemma-or-dilemna.aspx    I find this all very disconcerting. the word does not look-in any way, shape or form-correct with the supposedly correct ending of two” mms”. It looks weird.

Here is the expert opinion of Snopes…again, it is shocking to me and many others…

If you like words, share this with your family and friends…it could be a  good topic of discussion at a dinner with your kids or a dinner party …

I hope you have a wonderful weekend…brace yourselves if you are in the MidAtlantic or New England states…snow is coming-IN October!  IMAGINE!

This is MeddlingMom…try to spend a few minutes today or tomorrow in silence completely alone…notice the peace it brings you…

Never in my wildest dreams would I think dilemma is spelled any other way than “dilemma”! it looks perfectly natural to me.
